Anti-Corruption Efforts

Kazakhstan’s decision to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), launched by British Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2003, is a demonstration of the republic’s commitment to a culture of transparency.

Other measures include:

  • The creation of “one-stop” public service centers where it will be possible to obtain, at a single location, a passport, tax number, driver’s license, etc.
  • A reduction in the number of licenses and permits required in business and day-to-day life.
  • The development of a code of ethics for civil servants that precludes them from engaging in business or lobbying on behalf of business interests, and stronger disciplinary measures for code violations.
  • Punishment for giving or receiving bribes.
  • Increases in civil service pay, with the aim of making salaries comparable to those earned in the private sector.
  • Introducing competitive examinations for civil servants to reduce nepotism and graft.
