Almaty’s Urban Youth and “The Long Way Round”

Almaty’s Tamgaly Climbing Center was a stop on UNICEF Ambassador Ewan McGregor and UNICEF supporter Charley Boorman's journey while filming the documentary, "The Long Way Round", a documentary about their tour around the globe via motorcycle. Ten climbing walls like the one at Tamgaly were erected with the support of UNICEF as a recreational outlet for Almaty’s urban youth. Heeding the success of UNICEF’s program, the government has erected nine more youth climbing walls across the country.

In "The Long Way Round", Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman travelled through some of the most exciting terrain in the world. The trip began in 2004 when they left London and rode through France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada and the United States, before ending their trip in New York City.
