Urker, or “Constellation” in English, was the first Kazakh band to have a video shown on American television. Fronted by singer-songwriter Aidos Sagat, the pop folk band first performed at an Almaty rock club in 1993. The band has since released five albums and enjoys a broad national fan base that consists mostly, according to Urker, of progressive and patriotic Kazakhs from 20 to 40.
Vocalist Aidos Sagat was born in 1970 and studied in a conservatory as a child. Urker is the result of his desire to create a band that would incorporate Kazakh tradition with modern international pop music by using some traditional Kazakh instruments.
Their most recent album, "The Best of Urker", was released in 2004.
